Congratulations to the Atlas Technologies Team who shipped the latest of several Barrel Type Blank Stack Turnovers (BTO’s) to an automotive OEM in North America just before the holiday season.
The Atlas BTO is used to invert a stack of blanks - to create an “opposite” (LH vs RH) blank stack. This eliminates the need to separately produce and stack both LH & RH blanks.

The BTO sequence of operations is as follows:
1) The fork truck operator loads the stack of blanks into the BTO (without pallets). The fork truck then moves clear of the light curtain, the light curtain is manually reset by the operator who depresses a push-button to initiate the BTO auto cycle.
2) The cycle commences with the stack being fully clamped between the upper and lower platen. Once the proper clamping pressure is achieved, the barrel rotates a full 180 degrees to invert the stack. The platen then opens and the fork truck driver removes the inverted stack (without pallets). After removal of the stack, the BTO barrel is rotated back 180 degrees, by depressing the “return-to-home” button. The BTO is now ready for the next stack to be loaded.

The BTO clamping function is powered by a HPU and vertical acting hydraulic cylinders.
The barrel rotate function is powered by an electric motor, gear box and chain drive. A safety enclosure surrounds the BTO on (3) sides. A light curtain guards the load side of the BTO.
The enclosure houses the HPU motor starter and the VFD used to control the barrel roll drive. A small Mitsubishi PLC and HMI are provided to monitor operation of the BTO. Push-buttons are utilized to control the BTO functions.
The BTO is designed to handle blank stacks measuring up to 1900mm wide x 1200mm long x 470mm tall and weighing up to 4,000 KG. The BTO achieves a maximum clamping of approximately 12,000 KG. (3X the max stack weight)
The BTO clamp, rotate and unclamp cycle - requires slightly less than 2 minutes to complete.
Atlas Technologies produces stack turnover units for a broad range of stack sizes and weights and has shipped dozens of BTO’s throughout North America, Europe and Asia. A recent and optional upgrade from Atlas standard BTO units in the capability to run tailor-welded blanks.
Atlas Technologies is celebrating 60-years as a proven supplier of pressroom stamping automation products!
